Amara came to us on a Tuesday morning in 2019. She was nine years old, barefoot, and had been sleeping near the market for three weeks after losing her mother.
In those first months, she barely spoke. She ate slowly, as if she expected the food to be taken away. She slept with her shoes on.
But children are resilient in ways that humble us. By her second year, Amara was the first one in the classroom every morning. She taught herself to read English from a donated Bible. She helped the younger children with their numbers.
This August, Amara — now 16 — was awarded a full scholarship to a secondary school in Entebbe. She will study science. She wants to be a doctor.
She asked us to say thank you to everyone who gave. "Tell them," she said, "that I will not forget."
"Tell them I will not forget." — Amara, age 16, scholarship recipient.
